ON WATER
Watersports in Scotland in second to none. Cairngorms and Cowal have the perfect mix of calm lochs, rapid rivers and open seas.
SAILING
CAIRNGORMS
Picture this; you are skippering your boat on idyllic Loch Morlich with the breathtaking Cairngorm Mountains backdrop. You experience a mixture of calm and tranquility followed by bursts of wind spiraling down from the mountains; your adrenaline is racing. Time to pull the sail in tight and speed down the length of the loch.
Lagganlia Outdoor Centre has a variety of boat activities for all abilities and age groups. Optimist dinghies for smaller children, Laser Picos for two children or one adult and Laser Stratos that can take up to four people including an instructor.
ARGYLL
Benmore Outdoor Centre sailing base is a ten minute drive from the main centre, beside the Holy Loch on the Firth of Clyde and provides an excellent location for all sailors, from novice to expert. For beginners, your first sail could be with an instructor in our stable J80 keelboats and seafarers or, if conditions are suitable, the challenge of Sport 16, Wayfarer or Topaz dinghies, in sheltered waters. As your skills progress, you could expect to steer your dinghy into the exciting, wide open waters of the Clyde Estuary, under the watchful eye of an instructor in a fast safety boat , bringing a big, inspiring adventure.
RAFTING
CAIRNGORMS
Bouncing through exciting white water rapids on one of the most famous rivers in Scotland, the river Spey, is a fantastic way to work as a part team. The bustle of the river is often echoed in the hustle on the banks as you’ll bump into other river users, gillies and fishermen out to catch some Spey Salmon. The hard work reaps great rewards, negotiating the stretch of river between Ballindalloch and Knockando requires taking on the might of many rapids, including the infamous ‘Washing Machine’ and, the sense of accomplishment at the end of the run will be well deserved. It is a gorgeous run through some classic Strathspey scenery.
KAYAKING AND CANOEING
CAIRNGORMS
Participants on these specialist courses may choose to spend some time away from Benmore on an expedition. Kayaking is available at Loch Insh, Loch Morlich, River Spey, River Findhorn.
ARGYLL
A wide range of canoeing activities is available from our scenic base on the shores of Loch Eck, Holy Loch and River Eachaig. You may be introduced to kayaking or open Canadian canoeing on our local loch, while those with more experience can visit other areas. Scotland’s rivers offer some of the most excellent whitewater in Britain and amongst these are the Rivers Awe and Orchy which we visit regularly. Sea kayaking amongst the islands off the west coast can provide a unique chance to observe seals, seabirds and other marine life at close hand, while open Canadian canoeing is ideal for making a journey along a beautiful loch or down a river. Rafting building is also available which is a great team building exercise for any group.
SHORE SCRAMBLES
ARGYLL
A rocky shore provides the venue for this enjoyable activity. Scrambling above the sea on Loch Long at Ardentinny is excellent for exploration and confidence, and there is a variety of options depending on both skill and willingness to get wet. There are plenty of opportunities to study the coastal environment.
